Stone Mountain Diabetic Foot Care

If you have been diagnosed with either type one or type two diabetes, you probably are aware that there are complications that you need to be aware of in various parts of your body. This most certainly includes your feet. Our Stone Mountain diabetic foot care is fully prepared and qualified to keep you from suffering the worst consequences that can come about due to diabetes. Here at InStep Podiatry, we believe in prompt detection and timely treatment. Ignoring your foot care when you have diabetes can result in a worst case scenario of losing a foot or even a leg to the disease.

You may be wondering about some of the ways that diabetes can have an impact on your feet. One problem is neuropathy (nerve damage), which can occur and hinder the flow of blood to your feet. This may make you less sensitive to noticing temperature chances in your feet or detecting a foot injury. Your ability to feel pain in your foot often becomes compromised. Dry skin can also result because your nerves are in control of moisture levels. This may lead to cracking and peeling of the skin on your feet. It is a good idea for you to do a self-exam at home regularly to check for damage, blisters, or infections that you may not be aware of otherwise. Foot deformity is also a risk of diabetes. Our Stone Mountain diabetic foot care can recommend special therapeutic shoes that prevent changes to the shape of your feet and toes. Calluses can also form and thicken. Eventually, they can turn into foot ulcers. Slowed circulation from diabetes makes fighting off infections even more difficult, which can only make the situation worse.

All of the above may paint a bleak picture, but let us assure you that when you avail yourself of our Stone Mountain diabetic foot care, you will stay out ahead of such issues and they will be far less likely to occur. Regular exams at our office are highly recommended, as are certain lifestyle adjustments. Among them are giving up the use of tobacco in any form, getting proper exercise to boost your circulation, and following the recommendations of your primary physician when it comes to controlling your diabetes.

Do you suffer from foot pain due to ankle sprains, bunions, flat feet, hammertoes, diabetes, heel spurs, corns, or athlete’s foot? If you’re looking for a Stone Mountain podiatrist for any and all of those conditions, then it’s time you visit the InStep Podiatry. Our approach revolves around paying attention to all the details of the body, not to just the problematic part.

Foot pain can be caused by many different things. One of the most common causes of heel and arch pain in the foot is called plantar fasciitis. It involves pain and inflammation of a thick band of tissue (the plantar fascia) that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes. Your heel pain may be alleviated with prescribed customized shoe inserts called orthoses from our Stone Mountain podiatrist. Not all sources of foot pain are due to injury. Bunions, for example, are misaligned big toe joints that can become swollen and tender, causing the first joint of the big toe to slant outward, and the second joint to angle toward the other toes. Similarly, hammertoe is a deformity of the second, third, or fourth toes that will require Paramus foot care. In this condition, the toe is bent at the middle joint, resembling a hammer. Left untreated by a podiatrist, hammertoes can become inflexible and require surgery. Corns and calluses are protective layers of compacted, dead skin cells that can also cause pain. They are caused by repeated friction from skin rubbing against bony areas or against an irregularity in a shoe. Corns ordinarily form on the toes and calluses on the soles of the feet. Foot pain can also be due to a chronic infection caused by various types of fungus. Athlete’s foot, for example, is often spread in places where people go barefoot such as public showers or swimming pools. Patients with diabetes are also prone to foot pain, so it is vital they visit for podiatrist for special care as well.

At InStep Podiatry, we view the person as a sum of all the body parts. For example, we will not treat just the foot as a foot problem but we will address other aspects of the body which have a correlation. This allows us to treat the whole body, not just the foot or the ankle. We can treat the problem at the core, not just take away the symptoms of it. By visiting one of our Stone Mountain podiatrists, you’ll be one step closer to having healthy and happy feet, ankles, and legs. Call our office today to schedule an appointment!

Hammertoe, which occurs when the middle joint of your toe bends or curls, becoming stuck in that position. At InStep Podiatry, hammertoe is just one of the various issues that we work with in treating foot problems. Our Stone Mountain podiatrist is a specialist in addressing concerns of the foot, including the toes, and ankles, too. Many times, hammertoe will lead to pain, which may hinder your ability to walk, stand, work, and go about your normal way of life. We can provide relief and help you to feel normal again.

The reason that hammertoe occurs is that excessive pressure is put upon the tendons and joints of the toe. That makes it move into that flexed position. If we dig a little deeper into the causes of hammertoe, however, we find that arthritis, genetic predisposition, and frequently ill-fitting footwear are contributing factors. This is especially true when shoes are too tight over the toe area, a situation that is often linked to high-heeled shoes. It’s largely for that reason that women get hammertoe more frequently than men do. A hammertoe may be rigid, where cannot move it at all. Or it could be flexible, with a minimal range of motion available to you. Treating foot problems will depend on which type of hammertoe you have, and our Stone Mountain podiatrist will assess your situation.

If you have a hammertoe, particularly one that is causing you a great deal of pain, call us to schedule an exam. Our Stone Mountain podiatrist will take x-rays and do a physical checkup of your foot to reach a diagnosis and then recommend the most appropriate way for treating foot problems. An orthotic placed in your shoe could be sufficient to address a flexible hammertoe. It will reduce the pressure on the toe, which should return to its normal state over time. If there is inflammation or swelling, medication might be prescribed. For severe pain, cortisone shots are sometimes recommended. For rigid hammertoe, or a flexible one that has not responded to the above methods, surgery is usually needed. This involves removing a small piece of bone and then realigning the joint.
